The author of numerous horrors, supernatural and fantastic bestsellers was born in September, 1947, in Portland, USA. Stephen King is considered to be one of the most readable writers in a whole world. When he was 7, Stephen started to write own stories inspired with science fiction and monster movies.

He graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and got a position of English teacher at a high school in Maine. Besides, he also wrote short stories for some magazines. However, the works were not popular and Stephen did not receive much money from the sale of them. The first novel which had a great success was Carrie (1974) – this book helped him come to the top of writers of horror stories.

Stephen King’s novels are popular because of its simple language, detailed description of characters, attention to modern issues and ordinary situations in which evil occurs. Mark Twain (30.11.1835 - 21.04.1910) - American author.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) was born on 30 November 1835 in Florida. His parents were John and Jane Clemens. After moving to Missouri John met Jane and some years later they married. There were seven children in their family but only four survived: Samuel, Henry, Orion and Pamela. Samuel was the sixth child.

At the age of 4 his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri. This town impressed him and it was later described in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Missouri was known as a slave state and this theme became apparent in his writings.

Mark Twain’s father was a judge. In 1847 he died when Samuel was eleven. In 1848 Samuel became an assistant of a printer. In three years he started working as a typesetter. Jack London was born in 1876 in San Francisco. His real name was John Griffit. His father was a farmer. The family was extremely poor and the boy had to earn his living after school. He sold newspapers, worked at a factory. Later he became a sailor; during some time he wandered vrith the unemployed.For a year he attended the Oakland High school and spent a semester at the University of California, but as he had no money he had to stop his studies and went to work again.

This time it was a laundry. In 1897 he went to the Klondike as a gold miner. His first short story was published in 1898.

Some of the difficulties he met during the first years of his literary work are described in his novel "Martin Eden".

During the sixteen years of his literary career Jack London published about fifty books: short stories, novels and essays. In his best stories London described the severe life and struggle of people against nature.He died at the age of forty in 1916.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born on March 31st, 1809. He was a Russian dramatist, novelist and short story writer.

Gogol was born in the Ukrainian Cossack village of Sorochyntsi, in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire. His mother was a descendant of Polish landowners. His father Vasily Gogol-Yanovsky, a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks and who died when Gogol was 15 years old, wrote poetry in Ukrainian and Russian.

In 1820, Gogol went to a school of higher art in Nizhyn and remained there until 1828. It was there that he began writing.

His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by Ukrainian culture and folklore. The novel Taras Bulba(1835) and the play Marriage (1842), along with the short stories "Diary of a Madman", "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", were his best-known works.

On March 4th, 1852 Gogol he took to bed, refused all food, and died in great pain.

Oscar Wilde is a famous English writer of the 19th century, Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1854. His mother wrote poetry, and she taught him to love literature.

He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. Soon after leaving university his first volume of poetry, "Patience" was published.

Oscar Wilde married Constance Lloyd in 1884 and the couple had two sons. When the boys were children Wilde wrote fairy stories for them that were later published as "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" (1888).
